COCOA BEACH, Fla. (WFLA) — While Hurricane Erin is not expected to make landfall, the massive storm will bring dangerous waves and rip currents to Florida's east coast.
The surf was already rough Monday, with one surfer having to be rescued in Brevard County — and officials said it's expected to grow worse by Wednesday.
The surfer suffered a spinal injury while out in the rough waves, Brevard County Ocean Rescue told NBC affiliate WESH.
Red flags have been flying at the beaches, and lifeguards are ramping up patrols. They are urging anyone who is not a strong swimmer to stay out of the water.
"We have our seven year-round lifeguarded beaches, but we have areas in between and we’ll have our mobile units going up and down the coastline and checking in with people that may not be at a gua
