Santee’s water customers will be getting smart meters so they can monitor their usage online – and spot leaks – in almost real time.

The town council voted on Aug. 6 to purchase the Neptune 360 Advanced Metering Infrastructure set-up and meter change-out system for $823,151.

Of the total, $325,000 will be financed at 4.9 percent interest for five years.

The meters store up to 96 days of usage data. They automatically detect problems such as continuous flow, meter tampering, or reverse flow.
