When it comes to planning for future growth, Vancouver officials face a dilemma: The city needs to add more than 38,000 new housing units by 2045 to meet the demands of a growing population, but development of apartments within the city limits has slowed.
“Through the first six months of 2025, multifamily unit completions are only at one quarter of the annual goal,” Bryan Monroe, the city’s associate housing project coordinator, told city councilors Monday. “Unfortunately, housing production within the city continues to fall well short of the annual goal of 2,000 units needed to close the housing deficit.”
