(CNN) - The U.S. State Department is cracking down on student visas and has revoked thousands this year alone.
Monday, a State Department official said more than 6,000 student visas have been pulled this year.
Roughly 4,000 of those revocations stemmed from alleged criminal violations, including DUI, assault and burglary.
A couple of hundred more visas were revoked for alleged terrorism ties under the Immigration and Nationality Act.
The crackdown comes amid new vetting rules pushed by the Trump Administration.
The new rules require student visa applicants to make their social media accounts public and allow officials to screen for so-called hostile attitudes toward the U.S.
