Republican lawmakers in California are moving to block Gov. Gavin Newsom's redistricting effort by, among other things, urging the California Supreme Court to strike down Democratic-led plan.

Their opposition taking shape as residents from up and down the state and leaders of local Republican groups showed up to a hearing Tuesday to voice opposition to Democrats' plan.

Democratic legislators introduced new California maps Monday. It was the first official move toward the fall referendum asking voters to override the independent commission's work after the 2020 census.

At a press conference on Tuesday, several Republican state lawmakers slammed what they described as a power grab.

"What Governor Newsom's power grab is trying to do is what they just did last night. No public input, no transparency, no light of day," said State Sen. Tony Strickland. "Still, no one can answer. Who drew those maps?" he asked.
