The wall between the United States and Mexico is slated to get a paint job.

During a news conference on Tuesday, Aug. 19, along the border in Santa Teresa, New Mexico, Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem announced that the entire steel structure would be painted black.

Noem asserted that the new paint job would have a dual benefit — on one hand, the paint would protect the border wall against rust, while also making it hot to the touch for anyone considering entering the U.S.

She gave no indication of the cost of the project nor a timeline for when it might be completed.

When asked about the possibility that critics might call the heat-inducing paint job cruel, Noem responded, “Don’t touch it.”
