Alex Cora knows what it’s like to face a fellow countryman in a baseball game. He has gone up against a Puerto Rico-born manager multiple times in his career—an experience that was a first for Venezuelan-born managers Carlos Mendoza and Miguel Cairo on Tuesday.

There have only been four pairs of Latin American managers to face each other in MLB history. Alex Cora’s name appears in two of them: once against former Blue Jays manager Charlie Montoyo, and once against Astros manager Joe Espada.

During a recent trip by the Houston Astros to Boston earlier in August, it was the first time in 13 years—and only the fourth time in MLB history—that both the manager and bench coaches from each team were born in Latin America. Alex Cora’s bench coach, Ramón Vázquez, faced Joe Espada and Omar López.
