LANSING, Mich. (WILX) - The State Board of Education has selected three finalists to become Michigan’s next state superintendent.

The candidates are:

Dr. Lisa Coons, former Virginia state superintendent of public instruction.

Dr. Glenn Maleyko, superintendent of Dearborn Public Schools.

Dr. Judy Walton, superintendent and curriculum director for Harrison Community Schools.

The finalists were among a group of seven candidates who were selected from a field of 33 applicants.

Current State Superintendent Dr. Michael F. Rice announced in April that he is retiring from the position on October 3.

The board hopes to have a new superintendent on October 4.
