Mayfield loves the mountains.
Trojans coach Gary Bradley started a tradition of taking his team camping in the nearby Organ Mountains during the offseason. Players go through obstacle courses, do team-building exercises and spend time with each other throughout the day.
They also leave their phones behind, which aims to accomplish one thing.
"It forces everybody to talk to each other," Bradley said. "They don't have their phones, and they don't have any distractions. We talk to each other and we learn about each other so when it comes time to do what we do, and that's play football on Friday night, we trust each other a little bit more, and we understand each other a little bit more. I include the coaches with the players. We all talk."
