The Mulanje Magistrate’s Court has denied bail to four women accused of assaulting their sister-in-law, Dorica Amos, leaving her seriously injured.
The women, represented by James Chiundira of Legal Aid, had applied for bail on grounds that they are Malawians with fixed abodes. Chiundira further argued that one of the women is three months pregnant, while the others have children and families to care for, stressing that bail is a constitutional right for all accused persons.
However, Magistrate Aaron Ng’ambi dismissed the application, stating that evidence presented by the State and procedural irregularities in the case suggested that releasing the suspects could delay proceedings and risk their failure to appear in court.
