ATLANTA — A bipartisan panel appointed by Georgia Lt. Gov. Burt Jones focused on discussing the pros and cons of eliminating the state's income tax met for the first time on Tuesday morning.

The Senate Special Committee on Eliminating Georgia's Income Tax is made up of 11 Georgia senators, eight of which are Republicans and three of which are Democrats.

Jones, who currently serves as Georgia's lieutenant governor, said if he's elected to Georgia's top job as governor , he'll "completely eliminate the state income tax." Jones officially launched his campaign last month.

Three members of the committee are also competing to win the 2026 GOP primary for Lieutenant Governor: Its chairman, Sen. Blake Tillery (R-Vidalia), Sen. John Kennedy (R-Macon), and Sen. Steve Gooch (R-Dahlonega).
