Gorillaz has been churning out hit singles since the early 2000s and made a plethora of eye-catching, colourful music videos. But despite this, their fans are still in the dark about how the virtual band got its name – until now.

The animated London-based foursome – consisting of members 2-D, Murdoc Niccals, Russel Hobbs and Noodle – are the creations of Blur frontman Damon Albarn and artist Jamie Hewlett. The group was formed in 1998 and it has gone from strength to strength ever since its debut single Clint Eastwood stormed into the UK top 10 in 2001. The band are also scheduled to play four dates at the Copper Box Arena in Stratford between August 29 and September 3 as part of a tour.
