Russia’s most senior diplomat has just hit out at international efforts to resolve the Ukraine war without Moscow’s involvement, describing such talks as “clumsy”.
Russia’s foreign minister Sergei Lavrov attacked the seven European leaders who travelled to the White House with Ukraine’s Volodymyr Zelenskyy to talk through ending Vladimir Putin’s brutal invasion.
The meeting was called to discuss Donald Trump’s face-to-face with Putin on Friday in Alaska and future security guarantees for Ukraine in the event of a peace deal.
It concluded with the US president insisting the next step must be a bilateral meeting between Zelenskyy and Putin, followed by a trilateral which he would sit in on – although the Russian president is yet to agree to meet his Ukrainian counterpart.
