OTTUMWA, Iowa (OTTUMWA COURIER) - The Ottumwa City Council approved a traditional marriage proclamation Tuesday, Ottumwa Courier reports .
The proclamation recognizes and honors “traditional” marriage, or marriage between a man and a woman.
Only one person voted against the proclamation - Cara Galloway, who expressed concern regarding the document and the way it may divide the community.
“Proclamations should be about lifting people up and not tearing our community apart, and right now, that’s what these proclamations are doing. They’re tearing our community apart,” she said. “If proclamations continue to cause more controversy than celebration, then maybe we need to look at not doing proclamations.”
