President Donald Trump’s takeover of law enforcement in the nation’s capital has contributed to a climate of fear that “makes us all less safe,” U.S. Rep. Ayanna Pressley, D-7th District, said Wednesday.
“You know, if we had [Washington, D.C.] statehood, we wouldn’t be in a situation like this, but it is racist and rogue,” the Boston lawmaker said in an interview with GBH News’ “Boston Public Radio” program .
Trump declared a “crime emergency” in the nation’s capital on Aug. 11., arguing that “rising violence in the capital now urgently endangers public servants, citizens, and tourists, disrupts safe and secure transportation and the proper functioning of the federal government, and forces the diversion of critical public resources toward emergency response and security measures.”
