A team of Tavares Middle School (and younger) girls ran away from high school teams and rolled to a first place finish in Saturday’s Mike Gibson Summertime Run cross country preseason race at Lake Mary High School.
Alice Ilea, a precocious seventh grader, won the 5,000-meter event in a time of 19 minutes, 50.71 seconds. Second place went to her teammate, Aliana Alvarez, a fourth grader who won an elementary school national championship last November and a 1,500-meter age group state title in May. The three other girls who scored for the Red Sea Running Club were seventh grader Kayla Santos, eighth-grader Isabella Neal and Emma Williams, a fifth grader.
Their 48 point total put Red Sea well ahead of runner-up Lake Mary (76), which won Seminole Athletic Conference and district champion
