Ontario Premier Doug Ford slammed the U.S. owner of Hamilton’s Stelco Wednesday for publicly supporting ever-expanding steel tariffs — going so far as to suggest someone else should buy the local steelmaker.

Ford was in town Wednesday to announce $70 million in funding for retraining and employment services for workers laid off amid the tariff war started by U.S. President Donald Trump.

But the premier also took a pointed shot at U.S. steelmaking giant Cleveland-Cliffs — the new owner of Stelco — which is headed by CEO and tariff champion Lourenco Goncalves.

“He doesn’t give two hoots about his workers at Stelco,” said a riled Ford at a news conference at the United Steelworkers hall on Barton Street East.
