Homeless advocates said more toilets and trash cans would help alleviate Salem’s livability issues during a Wednesday morning city-led listening session that comes following several meetings with business owners who raised concerns about trash, petty crime and cleanliness.

City councilors told the group that money to provide such things is hard to come by and could enable those living on the streets.

The matter was discussed during the meeting at 440 Church St. S.E. which drew dozens of homeless advocates from a number of local organizations which provide services, as well as city officials, business owners, and other members of the public.

Participants were given three minutes to speak while city officials and city councilors listened and gave brief remarks toward the end.
