MIAMI — As he took swings in a batting cage last fall following his first game in the Arizona Fall League, Cardinals prospect Thomas Saggese felt “stuck” with where he was offensively.

Saggese, coming off a full season in Class AAA and an 18-game stint in the majors following a September call-up, thought about what could help him as he played in the “finishing school” for prospects. He thought turning his leg kick into a toe tap could be a way for him to unlock his offense as a possibility to unlock his offense.

That change helped Saggese bat .391 with a 1.118 on-base plus slugging percentage (OPS) and walk more often than he struck out in 18 fall league games. He took his toe tap home with him that offense, but saw it fizzle out as he worked more often on his leg kick.
