PASCAGOULA, Miss. (WLOX) - Countless stories have been told about Ingalls Shipbuilding, but there is one story you may have never heard: the riders of the storm.

They are the men and women who stay at the shipyard during South Mississippi’s roughest weather. Few storms have shaped how the multi-billion-dollar facility handles storm preparedness as much as Hurricane Katrina.

“I pride myself in trying to be a strong man and be prepared; do everything textbook,” said Jody Johnson. “But, there is no textbook to prepare for what we experienced.”

Johnson was among 500 workers who rode out Katrina at the shipyard. But he didn’t just volunteer for it: he felt it was his duty. In fact, he has braved every storm at the shipyard since he started there in 1998 -- almost 30 years ago.
