The funding tap is about to be turned on for projects to treat and reuse New Mexico's salty brackish water — but challenges for the concept remain.

Funding opportunities, including grants and contracts, for brackish water reuse projects will be released Monday by the Office of the State Engineer and the state Environment Department, officials announced at a Wednesday meeting of the Legislative Finance Committee.

Brackish water, a salty but naturally occurring type of water, has been targeted by state officials as a potential untapped resource to shore up New Mexico's water supply. The Strategic Water Supply, a grant program created by the Legislature earlier this year, offers contracts and grants for projects using brackish water that is been treated.
