Most people in San Diego County don’t worry about earthquakes until the earth beneath them starts shaking. Just ask folks out in Julian who were jolted by a quake back in April.

Up until Oct. 1, California is offering thousands of dollars to qualifying homeowners to retrofit their homes against earthquakes. It’s called the Earthquake Brace and Bolt grant program, which is managed by the California Residential Mitigation Program.

Homeowners can get a $3,000 seismic retrofit grant if their home was built before 1980 and is on a raised foundation — think crawlspace under your house.

Some may also qualify for an additional $7,000 if their household income is less than $89,040.
