SACRAMENTO, Calif. —

Hours before California lawmakers begin voting on legislation that would launch a statewide special election on redistricting, state leaders have still not figured out exactly how much they plan to spend on it.

A spokesperson for the California Secretary of State said the final estimate was expected to be released by the Department of Finance. A spokesman for the Department of Finance acknowledged KCRA 3's request for the costs but did not have an update as of late Wednesday afternoon.

The discussion around cost was at the center of two hearings at the state capitol on Wednesday. Legislative documents did not provide many specifics, noting the special election would cost in the "low millions of dollars."
