CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (KCRG) - A state inspector says Cedar Rapids has abandoned its responsibility to maintain its animal care and control center and has given the city less than two weeks to have a plan in place to meet state standards.
Inspection reports from the Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship show the shelter failed two inspections on August 15th and 19th. The city has to either fix the problems or make a plan by September 2nd.
TV9 first reported problems at the city’s animal control center in June. It had closed its doors periodically due to staffing shortages.
The inspector says she found “ongoing concerns with the roof leaking”. Inspectors found a mold infestation in the building, and the report stated dirty ceiling tiles could be dangerous to animals.
