Forty-four sick and injured cats and dogs are on the road to recovery after being seized from a home in Hunterdon County on Monday morning, an animal rescue group said.

Authorities removed seven dogs and 37 cats from a house on Sidney Road in Pittstown following a lengthy investigation into pet neglect, according to Annie Trinkle of the non-profit, volunteer-led Animal Alliance of New Jersey.

The animals were living at the home of a woman who runs a different animal rescue group.

“Most of them were very sick with upper respiratory infections and fleas and intestinal parasites,” Trinkle said Wednesday.

Trinkle said some of the animals had “gruesome” looking ailments and injuries.

The Hunterdon County Prosecutor’s Office declined on Tuesday and Wednesday to comment on the investigation.
