Before the establishment of Amtrak in 1971, no passenger rail service ran the entire length of the West Coast, meaning that travelers had to either drive along the coast or take a flight to their destination. This forced people to sit through a series of traffic jams, a key characteristic of California's largest cities, or to deal with all the headaches that come with commercial airline travel.

Amtrak gave West Coast travelers a new option after rolling out the Coast Starlight train, a route that combined two already existing routes along the West Coast. The Coast Starlight allows people to travel up and down America's Pacific coast with ease and in comfort, and over the years, this iconic Amtrak route has changed significantly.
