An Associated Press journalist captured the moment when strikes hit Central Gaza on Thursday while Israeli army gets ready to launch an operation to retake Gaza City and other areas.
The attack came after warning calls and a drone-fired missile.
While no casualties were reported, the strike destroyed roughly 100 tents sheltering people who had already fled fighting in other parts of the Strip. A building was also destroyed.
Smoke rose from the targeted area, and fires spread quickly through the makeshift shelters.
Civil defense teams rushed to the site, working to extinguish the flames.
Families, many of them with children, were left sifting through the ashes of what little they had managed to bring with them during earlier evacuations.
On Wednesday, the Israeli military said it plans to call up tens of thousands of reservists for an expanded operation in Gaza City.
Israe's defense minister approved the plan, which involves deploying 60,000 reservists and extending service for 20,000 more.
