Fire crews in San Rafael raced to put out a major apartment fire on Thursday morning, in a blaze seen from quite a distance away.

Police said the fire was burning at an apartment on Canal Street along the San Rafael Creek. Two wildfire cameras in the North Bay showed massive plumes of black smoke.

Police asked people in the area to stay away from the fire and closed surrounding streets.

Because of the fire, power was also cut to many residents living nearby.

Police said there were injuries but didn't immediately specify.
