Ulf Schnack never had second thoughts about moving to Grover Beach from his native Germany 15 years ago. His wife, Ute Schnack, had won a green card through the lottery system. He’d been offered a great job in his industry.

But then came illness and a medical system that he said was tough to navigate, slow to respond and ever changing with the tides of medical insurance.

It wasn’t until he was knocking on death’s door that he found Mission Hope Cancer Center, a happenstance that he said turned his life around through its team dedicated to his care.

“Mission Hope is what saved my life. I really did love Dr. Ben Wilkinson. He was our hero from the beginning with my radiation. I felt so welcome. When you go to treatment, it’s like going home. The staff is so friendly,” said Ulf.
