After just seven months in the role, Maggie Cornejo announced her resignation as executive director of the San Mateo County Sheriff’s Activities League, citing a divisive and paranoia-filled culture driven by a single board member.

Cornejo sent a scathing letter to the organization’s board of directors announcing her immediate resignation Aug. 19, stating that her time as executive director was “an experience I would not wish upon any employee.”

The Sheriff’s Office did not provide a comment.

A recent board meeting, held Aug. 14, was a telling example of a lack of professionalism and a “ceremonial body” that tolerated disrespect and unilateral control from a single board member, Cornejo said in her resignation letter.
