Menifee Police officers shot and killed a man during a standoff Wednesday night.

Dennis Martz, 57, was armed and threatening suicide in the 27000 block of Freedom Lane at about 8:15 p.m., police said in a news release posted on social media.

"When officers arrived, they attempted to communicate with Martz but were unsuccessful," the release said. "Members of the Crisis Negotiation Team also attempted contact, but Martz refused to respond."

During the standoff, Martz pointed one of his multiple firearms at police, prompting two officers to open fire, police said.

Martz was struck by gunfire and succumbed to his wounds.

The two officers were not hurt. They'll be placed on administrative leave pending an investigation.
