The MBTA is cracking down on fare evasion this fall.

Starting Sept. 8, fare engagement representatives will be at stations across the system to begin issuing formal warnings and citations for those who have not paid for their ride on the T.

Fare evasion costs the MBTA tens of millions of dollars annually. An NBC10 Boston Investigation this past spring revealed rampant fare evasion on the Green Line. The problem may be exacerbated by the contactless payment system the agency introduced in August 2024 . The technology allows riders to board by simply tapping a credit card or smartphone, making it easier to board at all doors - but it also makes it easier to hop on a trolley without paying.
