WASHINGTON (NEXSTAR) - California Democrats say they're "fighting fire with fire" by drawing new districts aimed at electing five more Democrats to Congress in response to Texas Republicans drawing districts aimed at electing five more Republicans.
"Bottom line is, California is reacting. We didn't look for this fight. This fight came to us," Rep. Lou Correa (D-Calif.) said.
California Democratic Congressman Lou Correa supports his state's plan.
It would ultimately have to go to voters in a special election this November, asking them to override the state's independent redistricting commission that voters previously put in place.
"We're doing it in a responsible manner. We are going to put it out to the voters for them to approve," Correa said.
