In the city of Orlando, the color of mourning is not black. It is red and orange. Yellow, green, blue and purple.

These are not just the colors of sorrow, though our grief has threatened to overwhelm us at times. They are the colors of support and solidarity, of respect and most of all, of love. They are the reminder that this community is stronger when we hold on to one another. They make a shield against acts of petty cruelty and politically motivated aggression.

Orlando is not unique. Across Florida, cities and counties, even local school boards, have taken a strong stance against bigotry and hate, no matter who is targeted. They have pointedly included members of the LGBTQ community, a group that just a few generations ago
