Former Dallas Cowboys player and civil rights advocate Pettis Norman died earlier this week at the age of 86. Outside of his time on the football field, Norman is being remembered as a successful businessman who was active in the Dallas community.

Norman played for the Cowboys between 1962 and 1970 before he was traded to the San Diego Chargers.

On Monday, the Cowboys announced the former tight end's passing.

Norman is credited with convincing head coach Tom Landry to stop assigning hotel rooms for players based on of race, which later changed to assignments based on names, according to the Cowboys website.
