COBB COUNTY, Ga. — A police officer has been relieved of their duties following their arrest on charges involving the distribution of obscene material on Thursday, according to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation.
GBI said Cobb County Police worked with the Utah Internet Crimes Against Children's Task Force, leading to a search warrant for the home of 36-year-old Matthew Abbott and his arrest.
The GBI Child Exploitation and Computer Crimes Unit initiated the investigation. Abbott was charged with violation of oath by office, distribution of obscene material, and two counts of public indecency on Aug. 21. Abbott, who had been an officer with Cobb County since 2016, is no longer with the department, according to Cobb County Police.
