ST. LOUIS — City officials on Thursday put out a call for landlords with extra apartments as the city races to find housing for hundreds if not thousands of tornado victims — and keep them in St. Louis long-term.

Officials have already set aside $243,000 to spruce up senior apartments in an old North Side hospital. And they have identified 160 more units that could be used for temporary or permanent homes for those now in hotels, backyard tents or on the street.

But they know they'll need more, much more. There are at least a couple hundred tornado victims living in hotels, with dozens more in shelters. And city staffers are calling through lists of people who have sought other kinds of help to figure out who else needs housing.
