DENVER (KDVR) — This week, the Thornton Police Department's Animal Control officers removed dozens of cats from a home near Hunters Glen Lake.

The officers had been sent to an apartment in the 12900 block of Washington Street on Monday after building management reported a "large number" of cats inside the apartment and "poor living conditions."

On Wednesday, officers returned to the apartment with a search warrant. They recovered 66 living cats from inside the apartment and one dead kitten.

Thornton police said the cats were taken to the Riverdale Animal Shelter for evaluation and care.

The owner was issued a municipal summons, the Thornton Police Department reported, and the owner voluntarily surrendered 37 of the cats.
