Alaska’s first city and the Salmon Capital of the World, Ketchikan, is marking its 125th anniversary on Monday, August 25.
Festivities kick off this Saturday, August 23, with a family fun day at Walker Field celebrating Tide-Flat Legends Baseball . The event will begin at 10 a.m. and feature games, music, history exhibits, and baseball activities.
Kim Simpson, chair of the anniversary committee, said the celebration highlights the unique spirit of Ketchikan. “There's a whole kind of Ketchikan spirit…a really strong bond. You may not always agree on everything, but the community really is the people,” she said.
The 125th anniversary celebrations will continue into September. Commemorative t-shirts, stickers, and pins are available for purchase.
