LANCASTER, Texas — A Lancaster High School football player who collapsed during practice on Monday has tragically passed away , but as his family, students, and staff grieve, one of the nation’s leading athletic trainers says the district’s response was “textbook.” He warns, however, that not every school is equally prepared.
15-year-old Preston Malone III died Wednesday morning, two days after suffering a heat-related emergency during practice at Lancaster Early College High School. District officials said staff noticed Malone wasn’t sweating while running conditioning drills, a sign of possible heat stroke.
Trainers immediately placed him in a cold tub, measured his temperature, and called 911. His body temperature dropped from 104°F to 102°F by the time paramedics arrived. Malone wa
