Michelle Zauner took a full year after finishing the new Japanese Breakfast album “For Melancholy Brunettes (& Sad Women)” to develop visuals that matched its darker, more melancholic tone.

Even after the commercial success of the 2021 album “Jubilee” — which earned a Grammy nomination the following year and coincided with her New York Times bestselling memoir “Crying in H Mart” — Zauner didn’t rush. Instead, she spent the year living in South Korea and planning an elaborate stage production.
