All lanes of the Coastal Highway, Route 1, are closed at the Indian River Inlet due to water on the road.

The Department of Transportation is monitoring the situation and will reopen the road as soon as the water recedes. The flooding is "a result of the storm and high tide," according to a late Aug. 21 news release.

Hurricane Erin is hundreds of miles away in the Atlantic, but the storm's presence was felt throughout coastal Delaware Aug. 21 as high tide approached.

Before night fell, waves were washing into the dunes up and down Delaware's Atlantic beaches and roads along the marsh and the inland bays were flooded. The area north of the Charles W. Cullen Bridge over the Indian River Inlet is the narrowest strip of land between the ocean and bays at the Delaware beaches.
