Despite $40M in damage, ice storm presents opportunity for Michigan foresters

The late March ice storm that swept through the northern Lower Peninsula profoundly damaged some of the region's forests.

It affected almost 1 million acres of state-owned forest — almost a quarter of Michigan's total. In some of the most severely damaged areas, the bare trunks of snapped trees look like toothpicks in a hot cake.
