PEORIA, Ill. (25 News) – A new state law is expanding the definition of what a bicycle is.

SB2285 was signed into law on August 1st, and defines electric bikes with top speeds lower than 30 miles per hour as a bicycle.

The purpose of the law is to protect riders in the event of a crash, and defines what is considered a bicycle for insurance purposes.

Doug Burgess, owner of Burgess Driving School, tells 25 News he’s in favor of the law.

“The more of them that are out there, the more we need to be aware of them, and the more regulations they need to have…so that people understand that there’s a safety risk involved there,” Burgess says.

The new law goes into effect immediately.
