The "largest watermelon" contest is now in full blast with growers in various parts of the state claiming to possess the champion. Recently, the Gazette news staff was presented with a melon that weighed 78 pounds, one of the largest that had appeared at that date, but yesterday W. N. Wilkes, commissioner of mines, manufactures and agriculture, received a melon weighing 114 1/2 pounds. It was grown by Edgar Laseter of Hope and was brought before the public through a "big melon" contest being conducted by a Hope drug store. Mr. Laseter has another melon that weighs 125 pounds, which is being sent to President Coolidge, according to a letter received by Mr. Wilkes.
