On Friday, new reports revealed FBI agents raided the home of former national security advisor John Bolton in Bethesda, Maryland.
Defense attorney Joey Jackson, speaking on CNN at the time of the raid, said the raid dredged up a number of disturbing questions considering the retaliatory nature of President Donald Trump.
“This is a person … that had a security clearance pulled [by the Trump administration]. He had his security detail pulled. He's adverse to the president. What world are we living in now again? Best case scenario, this is the Department of Justice doing their job.”

But Jackson said Trump is a vengeful president who likes to pull the levers of government to hurt his perceived enemies, and Bolton — a former Trump advisor — has criticized Trump on national television and in writing.
“Worst case scenario: this is political retribution,” said Jackson. “And if his attorney in front of the cameras, I'm going to say so. Everybody who criticizes the president, if you do it publicly, he's going to tweet about it, and then you're going to get your house raided.”
Jackson said Bolton looks like an example Trump is making for other would-be critics.
“What does that say to everybody else? If you speak against me, I'm coming to your home. If you speak against me, you may end up in jail. If you speak against me, you're going to incur millions of dollars in legal fees, so keep your mouth shut," Jackson said.

Jackson told CNN host Kate Bolduan that Trump has a tradition of sending warnings to more than just critics. He also likes to make an example of government and private institutions.
“If you're a university and you teach things I don't like, I'm going to take your funding,” Jackson said. “This is worst case scenario, a bizarro world that we're entering into, and it's very concerning from a legal perspective and practical. “
Recently, Bolton told ABC News' Jonathan Karl in an interview that Trump had a thirst for revenge against political opponents.
