An NYPD detective was struck and injured by gunfire from his fellow officers in Queens Friday as they tried to arrest a man wanted in connection with a carjacking near the Whitestone Bridge, New York City officials said.

Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch said the incident unfolded around 8:50 a.m. when the suspect attempted to steal a Black Toyota Highlander from an Uber driver parked on the bridge’s service road.

Officers from the 109th Precinct answered the Uber driver’s 911 call and were joined by detectives from the Queens South narcotics unit who happened to be passing by, Tisch said at a press conference at Jamaica Hospital, where the detective was recovering.
