ATLANTA — CDC Director Dr. Susan Monarez is back at the agency’s Roybal campus on Thursday morning, touring the damage caused by a gunman who opened fire two weeks ago, just as hundreds of staff face permanent layoffs.

Six buildings were damaged in the Aug. 8 attack, when investigators said a Georgia man fired more than 180 rounds at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. A DeKalb County police officer was killed, and the shooter blamed the COVID-19 vaccine for his deteriorating mental health, according to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation.

No CDC employees were physically hurt in the shooting, but the aftermath has rattled many, especially as the agency finalizes large-scale job cuts.
