Premier Minister Mark Carney is rolling back some retaliatory tariffs on U.S. goods, matching U.S. exemptions for goods covered under the Canada-United States-Mexico Agreement.
The Prime Minister made the announcement on Friday.
“As a result of that decision by the United States, the actual U.S. tariff rate on Canadian goods, is 5.6 per cent. Compare that to the 16 per cent global average. That remains the lowest among all the United States’ trading partners, and more than 85 per cent of Canada-U.S. trade is now tariff-free.”
The change comes into effect on September 1st, however tariffs on steel, aluminum and autos will remain in place as Canada works with the U.S. to resolve those issues.
