Kilmar Abrego Garcia , the man illegally deported to El Salvador, held in a notorious mega prison and brought back to face criminal charges in Tennessee , has been released from custody.

Abrego Garcia's attorney Sean Hecker told The Tennessean minutes after 2 p.m. Aug. 22 that Abrego Garcia was set free from the Putnam County Jail and on his way to Maryland.

"Today, Kilmar Abrego Garcia is free," a statement from Hecker reads. "He is presently en route to his family in Maryland, after being unlawfully arrested and deported, and then imprisoned, all because of the government’s vindictive attack on a man who had the courage to fight back against the Administration’s continuing assault on the rule of law.
